This region was originally mapped by French explorers and couriers des bois including French explorer Samuel de Champlain. From the mid 1800's onward, this area was harvested for its unique white pine and became one of the chief sources of white pine for the English market. For over 100 years, Bark Lake was a part of the famous river runs that saw timber floated down the river systems to Quebec City and onto ships bound for England.

Bark Lake is located just south of highway 60 10 km west of the village of Barry's Bay and 48 km east of the east gate of Algonquin Park. Algonquin Park is world famous for its natural beauty and the Bark Lake area is just as stunning.
